oral health care providers. In 2017, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeons provided recommendations to limit postoperative opioid prescription doses.

These recommendations encourage the use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),
perioperative corticosteroids, long-acting local anesthetics, and short-acting opioid
medications for acute breakthrough pain. With an emphasis on multimodal analgesia
and opioid dose limitation in mind, there is an opportunity to explore different modalities
that may help manage pain. This commentary aims to highlight cannabidiol (CBD) as
a possible treatment modality and to encourage future research that may determine
the effectiveness of CBD in treating conditions managed by oral health care providers.
The management of pain while limiting opioid prescriptions can pose a challenge to
oral health care providers.
