Dr. Chandan Advani

Co-CEO of Brush Dental Clinics, Toronto, Ontario

What is one thing you know now that you wish you had known at the start of your career?

The one thing I appreciate now is just how valuable and precious time is. This lesson makes it vitally important to spend time balancing professional growth and development with personal goals and enjoyment. This balance makes us well rounded, more refreshed and better suited to interact with everyone around us.

What is the one piece of equipment you could not work without?

My dental loupes/light are the most important part of my practice arsenal. They open up a world of detailed observation and precision which allows me to achieve the best possible results for my patient. I simply will not practice dentistry without them.

What is the most important piece of advice you would give to a new practitioner?

Commit to a lifetime of continuing education in relation to all facets of dentistry, including the latest and most innovative techniques and technologies. By investing in such research and development, you will be able to ensure the delivery of the highest quality of dental care to your patients. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be shy. I am always happy to share my thoughts with my junior associates and provide them with lessons I have learned along the way.

What would you consider your greatest achievement?

An appreciation for the need for support and assistance from others, including my partners, in the business of dentistry. Understanding that although I may be able to do it “all” on my own, sometimes I will not achieve optimal results without the appropriate individuals working with me to support my ambitions and goals.

What is your biggest day-to-day challenge?

Ensuring that each of my team members understands that they are an integral part of the team. Dentistry, for the most part, can be a practice in routines; it is the human interactions that make the business remarkable and fulfilling. When a team member feels valued, they will be motivated to continue to excel and deliver optimal results.

What do you consider to be your best and worst qualities?

For me, both would be encapsulated by my quick response times to emergent issues. While a quick response time highlights my respect and prioritization of my colleagues by addressing their issues as fast as possible, I am also mindful that responding too quickly can result in a hasty and potentially regrettable decision being made. I am working on finding the most effective balance.

What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?

I would love to teach on a regular basis, as imparting knowledge to future generations and having them learn from my failures would bring me a great deal of personal satisfaction and fulfillment. I had the opportunity to teach early in my career and found it to be an exceptionally rewarding experience.
