Dental auction raises more than £15,000 for Dentaid

by adminjay

A five-figure sum has been raised for a dental charity after an award-winning dentist auctioned his dental equipment and instruments.

Dr Julian Perry, an implant dentist, donated all of his dental equipment to fundraise for dental charity, Dentaid.

Auctioning the items on Ebay, the sales raised more than £15,000 for the cause, which provides free dental care to vulnerable groups in the UK and abroad.

The mission of Dentaid

‘This money will allow us to expand our outreach work for homeless and vulnerable people across the UK,’ said Jill Harding at Dentaid.

‘We are currently running about 20 clinics a month. But every week we are getting several requests for new clinics in new locations across the UK and the need is huge.

‘The funding will allow us to visit new locations and start building relationships with new communities of homeless and vulnerable people. Just last week we started new projects in Southampton and Portsmouth.

‘Once these are established, we go back each month. So there’s a reliable dental service for people who struggle to access care. It’s about getting people out of pain and ensuring they can access oral cancer screening and dental health advice.

‘But it’s also about listening to them, restoring their self confidence and helping them to consider the importance of dental care. This is so they can move on to other stages of their lives.’

30 years’ experience

The auctioned collection included handpieces, dental chairs and stools, and a variety of dental instruments. For example:

  • Saddle stool
  • Bone curettes and periosteal elevators
  • Durr Vista Scan Don Perio
  • Durr V300 suction motor 2006.

Julian graduated in 1983 from Birmingham University and placed his first dental implant in 1984. Currently he teaches dental implantology nationwide.

He is past president of the Cosmetic Dental Association and the dentist responsible for opening Europe’s first dental centre into Selfridges, London.

He has more than 30 years’ experience in dentistry.
