As Canada prepares for new Liberal leader Mark Carney to take over following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation in early January, a New Brunswick MP says dental care is among the “greatest hits” that history will judge the outgoing leader positively on.
“The list of greatest hits with the Canada Child Benefit, dental care, the ($10 a day) childcare plan, massive investments in housing, cannabis, all those things I think have made Canada a better place,” New Brunswick MP Wayne Long told the Canadian Press.
Trudeau’s final months as leader were marked by internal challenges, as backbench MPs like Long pushed for him to step down.
Still, Long said he believes history will view Trudeau favourably.
“I believe that over years seven, eight and nine, he surrounded himself with fewer and fewer people. He was less open to hearing other people’s opinions. We felt it in caucus.”

In his farewell speech at the Liberal convention, Trudeau reflected on the challenges Canada has faced and the future of the party.
“This is a nation-defining moment. Democracy is not a given. Freedom, it’s not a given. Canada is not a given. None of those happen by accident. None of them will continue without effort,” he said.
Trudeau’s speech comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened Canada with economic annexation and imposed tariffs on Canadian imports.
