The new 2023 federal budget has been announced and Canadian dentists are applauding the increased funding of $13 billion over the next five years, starting in 2023-24.
Last year, the temporary dental benefit was available for uninsured children under the age of 12, in households with an income less than $90,000. This year, the program will be opening up to people who are under the age of 18, seniors, and people with disabilities who meet the income criteria and do not have insurance. The plan is to include anyone who meets the eligibility and income requirements by 2025.
“We applaud the federal government’s continued commitment to improve the oral health of Canadians and increase access to dental care for those who need it most with this historic investment,” says Dr. Lynn Tomkins, CDA president. “CDA has long advocated for targeted investments to improve access to oral health care. This additional funding reflects the recommendations found in our most recent policy paper and promises to yield even more long-term gains in oral and overall health.”
