Orthodontic News – Boyd Industries Acquires the Global Surgical SMR Product Line and Now Caters to Dental and ENT Specialists

Odontogenic sinusitis is fairly common, yet it is prone to misdiagnosis. ODS is uniquely suited to both dental and ENT specialties. A collaborative approach between otolaryngologists and dental surgeons is often required to effectively evaluate, manage, and successfully treat their patients. Adrian LaTrace, CEO of Boyd Industries, continues to further refine and specialize their products to cater to orthodontists, oral surgeons, pediatric dentists, endodontists, and ENT specialists. Boyd Industries has recently acquired the Global Surgical SMR product line, creating a synergy between dentistry and otolaryngology.

(Clearwater, FL) March 06, 2023 — The correlation between dental infections and sinus disease has been acknowledged as far back as 1943 and may be responsible for in excess of 40% of maxillary sinusitis cases.1Despite the fact that 29% to 40% of chronic sinusitis has a dental pathology, and 10% to 64% are caused by dentoalveolar surgery, odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is routinely misdiagnosed among dentists and ENT doctors.2 Adrian LaTrace, CEO of Boyd Industries, recognizes the overlap between dentistry and otolaryngology; he observes that “ENT and dental specialists have seen changes in recent years that call attention to the many services needed for total oral, jaw, ear, nose, and throat health.”

ODS is caused by a dental infection that can result from poor oral hygiene or dental surgery and accounts for roughly 10% of sinus infections. In persons 50 years of age or older, the odds of maxillary sinus conditions resulting from a tooth infection increase to 50%.3 Cooperation is essential between otolaryngologists and dentists in order to prevent the serious complications of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis. If left untreated, ODS can lead to serious health risks, including vision loss, eye infection, or pneumonia.4 Chronic sinusitis can be life-threatening if the infection spreads to the bones, spinal fluid, or the brain, which could lead to meningitis and brain abscesses.5

To magnify the successful diagnosis and treatment of ODS, there needs to be a coordinated effort between otolaryngologists and dental providers. Confirmation of ODS requires a diagnosis of infectious sinusitis by an otolaryngologist and corroboration of adjacent maxillary dental pathology by a dental specialist. A multidisciplinary approach should follow to weigh the risks and benefits of dental and sinus surgical interventions. When both the dental pathology and sinusitis are addressed, resolution can be expected in 90% to 100% of cases, either through primary dental treatment or endoscopic sinus surgery.6

Boyd Industries, long known as the market leader in the design and manufacture of highly-reliable, innovative dental and medical operatory equipment, has recently acquired SMR, a 35-year-old brand of ENT equipment from Global Surgical, that moves them into the broader medical industry in addition to dentistry. LaTrace explains, “General practitioners provide referrals to specialists in all areas of oral care that overlay with medical care. I have immersed myself in exploring more ways our products can better serve these medical industry relationships.” Boyd Industries’ pioneering, ergonomic design of operatory examination chairs lends itself to both dental and ENT procedures.

Boyd Industries’ acquisition of the Global Surgical SMR product line of ENT equipment, including exam chairs, microscopes, and treatment cabinets, complements Boyd Industries’ award-winning products, including a full line of dental exam, treatment, and surgery chairs, delivery systems, exam lighting, custom clinical cabinetry, operator seating, and other office accessories.

LaTrace attests, “Our products are made in the U.S.A. and feature the highest quality craftsmanship using revolutionary manufacturing methods that offer superior durability and proven reliability. The solution for growing markets in both ENT and dentistry requires solid equipment to aid professionals and their practices with the personalized products they need to focus on providing state-of-the-art patient care.”
