Out of office – Anna Middleton on eating out with friends – Dentistry Online

by adminjay

In this weeks Out of Office Anna Middleton talks to us about what she gets up to during her leisure time, the hobbies that have kept her busy and fit and where she hopes to travel once lockdown ends.

Please introduce yourself

My name is Anna Middleton and I am a dental hygienist and the founder of www.londonhygienist.com.

What do you get up to in your spare time away from dentistry?

This year my spare time has been used studying for my BSc in oral sciences at the University of Essex. It is a one-year top up course to become a dental therapist.

I do keep my weekends free now to allow me to have a break from dentistry.

What does a typical weekend look like for you?

I used to work every Saturday. But that eventually took its toll on me. So I dropped down to one to two Saturdays per month.

Weekends are usually spent with friends and family. I love to eat out and explore London as well as take trips away. I also enjoy comedy and music gigs.

Weekends have been a little bit more lonely due to lockdown. I have been keeping Monday to Friday work/study focused and then on the weekends I have been enjoying watching films, reading, going for walks and baking.

Are you a foodie?

I love eating out and I miss it! While I have enjoyed cooking new recipes, I can’t wait to be able to go out and eat with friends. I love sushi and Asian food, but would never turn down pizza.

I’m trying to be good and have only had a handful of takeaways during lockdown. I treated myself to a Chinese for my birthday.

Are you into any sport?

I don’t play any particular sports, but have been exploring various different exercises at home. I have never been a runner, but I am now up to 7k since lockdown.

Yoga I enjoy and have been doing sessions online with my Yogi. I have a new found love for Yin yoga as well as the free Pilates sessions my friend has been hosting for a group of us.

I have also dusted off the boxing gloves for some online body combat classes.

What type of television/movies do you like – any guilty pleasures?

I am a sucker for a horror or good comedy. I binged the whole series of Normal People on BBC. Generally I don’t watch a lot of TV but lockdown has given me the opportunity to catch up on some shows.

Currently I’m obsessed with Michael Jordan’s – The Last Dance on Netflix.

Guilty pleasure…Hollyoaks.

Do you like to travel and do your hobbies take you anywhere in particular?

I love travelling and sadly have had three trips postponed. I was due to head to Switzerland, Italy and Greece. I’m remaining optimistic for Mexico over Christmas and New Year.

I have family and friends in Canada and my parents are currently living in Georgia.

Why is it important to have hobbies away from your profession?

I think having a good work-life balance is vital to ensure you don’t suffer from burnout. Life is there for living. The older I have become the more I have realised how important it is to rest and recharge.

For me, having two jobs, a business and studying again means I really look forward to being able to switch off every now and then.
