Harry Singh talks about his passion for cricket, why he can no longer take part in it and his love for work.
Please introduce yourself
Dr Harry Singh, a registered dentist that undertakes facial aesthetics and property investing.
What do you get up to in your spare time away from dentistry?
I love teaching and learning. I train other dental professionals in facial aesthetics and property investing.
The more I teach, the more I learn myself. And this takes me to my second passion, personal development. I probably spend at least 30 days a year on personal development courses/workshops/conferences.
Are you a foodie? Why and what particular food do you go for?
Oh yes. My family routinely say to me ‘see food, eat food’.
I cannot cook and I don’t enjoy it. So I’m regularly going out with the family to eat out. I love Italian food, pizza and pasta.
I knew the cards are not good for you, but you only live once.
Are you into any sport? If so what sport and why did you get into it in the first place?
Before married life and kids I was big into sports.
My real passion is cricket. I love the game, but also the jokes on the field, the cakes at tea and the drinks in the Puma after the game.
Now you can see why the wife and kids don’t allow me to take part anymore.
What type of television/movies do you like – any guilty pleasures?
I don’t watch much TV. Despite being a big cricket and football fan. I don’t even have Sky Sports, I know I would watch sports all day and all night.
One of my mentors said to me ‘poor people have big TVs and rich people have big libraries’. That’s always stuck in my mind, hence the reluctance to watch much TV.
Do you like to travel and do your hobbies take you anywhere in particular?
Yes, love travelling. But I can’t have a ‘relaxing’ holiday. You’ll never catch me sitting on a beach for two weeks. One I can’t swim and two, I don’t need a suntan!
Therefore I love city and culture breaks, I always want to do something, experience something, learn something.
Why is it important to have hobbies away from dentistry?
This is going to sound corny, because I really, really love what I do, I don’t feel I need a break from my work or a hobby to take my mind off it.
I love waking up every morning and doing what I do every day. I’ve reached the stage where I can decide when I work, what I work on, and with whom I work with.
Once you reach that stage, every day is like a holiday/hobby.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Saying all that, I do believe in the power of time to yourself when we are not active. Whether that’s taking a long walk or a spa day. I need that ‘white space’ for my mind, where the mind is free to wonder. My best ideas have come from this period of reflection or not over thinking about anything particular.
You can’t sit down and say, ‘let’s get creative’. Creativity comes at any time and you have to be ready for it.
