Emergency Dentist in Colorado Springs

Losing a tooth when you’re a kid is exciting, but once you’re an adult, you want to keep all of your pearly whites for life. Unfortunately, sometimes a tooth needs to be removed to preserve the health of the rest of your smile. If your emergency dentist in Colorado Springs has told you that you need a tooth extraction, it’s perfectly natural to be a bit anxious before the procedure. However, modern dental techniques and technology have made this common treatment simpler, faster, and more comfortable than ever before. To ease your mind, here is a basic guide on what you can expect at every step of the tooth extraction process.

Step 1: Numbing Your Mouth

First things first, your dentist will numb your problem tooth and the area around it. You may feel a short pinch as the local anesthetic is administered. It will take a few minutes for the numbness to fully take effect, but it should last throughout the duration of your procedure.

Step 2: Loosening the Tooth

Once your mouth is numb, your dentist will place a small instrument called a dental elevator in between the tooth and its surrounding bone. The tooth is gently rocked back and forth to loosen it. You may feel a bit of pressure, but you shouldn’t feel pain.

Step 3: Removing the Tooth

After loosening the tooth, your dentist will grasp it with a pair of dental forceps. They will again gently rock the tooth back and forth until it breaks free from the surrounding connective tissues and comes out. Like the last step, you will likely feel a strange pressure, but the anesthetics will prevent the procedure from hurting.

Step 4: Closing the Gap

Next, the dentist will rinse out the socket to ensure it’s clean. In most cases, the gums will be closed over the now-empty space with stitches that will dissolve later. Lastly, your dentist will place gauze over the site to slow down the bleeding. Again, because the anesthetic will still be in effect, you probably won’t feel this step.

Step 5: Post-Op Care

A few hours after your procedure, the numbness will start to wear off. To minimize any discomfort, take your first dose of your prescribed pain medication before you fully regain sensation in your mouth. It’s completely natural to experience some soreness, swelling, and light bleeding for the next few days. These symptoms can typically be managed with cold compresses, over-the-counter pain relievers, and rest. Your smile will be back to normal before you know it!

While they may sound scary at first, tooth extractions are nothing to fear. They’re designed to help you get out of pain and back to smiling. Your dentist will do their utmost to improve your oral health as comfortably as possible!
