The Dentistry Awards winners – Michael Crilly – Dentistry Online

by adminjay

After winning at both The Dentistry Awards and Irish Dentistry Awards, we spoke to Michael Crilly about the night and what it meant to him.

How does it feel to have won an award?

I was absolutely ecstatic to win ‘Best Young Dentist Northern Ireland’ at The Dentistry Awards!

I hadn’t expected to be shortlisted, let alone win it! Following that my practice, Blueapple Dental Care, were happy to be shortlisted as finalists in three categories (Practice of the Year, Best Patient Care, Irish Dentistry’s Rising Star – Michael Crilly) and were looking forward to a great evening.

With all the wonderful practices shortlisted we would have been over the moon to win even one of these awards! To go on to be crowned winners in each category and win the overall prize of Practice of the Year Ireland was just phenomenal!

Did you enjoy the awards evening?

Both awards evenings I attended were excellent! I attended The Dentistry Awards alone, but managed to meet up with some of my colleagues on the night. We ended up meeting some wonderful people who I’ve kept in touch with since.

At the Irish Dentistry Awards we had such a great time! It was great to be surrounded by all of our Irish dental colleagues and be part of an event showcasing all that is good within dentistry in Ireland!

Both nights were so professionally put together. The food is delicious and the entertainment was excellent. I definitely enjoyed celebrating on both occasions – maybe even a little too much!

Why did you choose to enter the awards?

My practice has been at the Irish Dentistry awards several times before, most recently in 2019. We were disappointed not to pick up any awards on that occasion and decided to plan the year ahead to ensure we advanced and improved.

We agreed as a team that we would take the year and work hard on providing our best dentistry, capturing exciting and interesting cases, attending courses, doing charity work and educating our colleagues. It was a fantastic year and all the hard work paid off.

I also took the plunge to enter myself into The Dentistry Awards in the hope that maybe I could win both ‘Best Young Dentist Northern Ireland’ and Irish Dentistry’s ‘Rising Star’ award. I’m glad I did, and now can proudly say I’m the winner of both!

What do you think the awards are doing to the standards within the profession?

The awards represent a platform for showcasing outstanding levels of care for patients. They show the highest standards of clinical work and the passion within dentistry to drive and progress into the future.

The awards are an opportunity for recognition for all the hard work we all do as teams. And a chance to showcase your talents and have pride in what you do.

I believe these awards have certainly motivated me even more to be the best dental professional I can be.

Why do you think you won?

For each entry I focused on the things that I do well and the things we do best as a practice. I detailed our strengths, showcased out talents and provided evidence of patient satisfaction.

Our clinical work speaks for itself and I believe the high standard of clinical dentistry we provide is one of the main reasons we have been so successful at the awards.

I had the pleasure of speaking to one of the judges after the Irish Dentistry ceremony. They informed me that our entries were a cut above. They were particularly impressed with the quality of our photography and clinical work.

This was the icing on the cake after a fantastic night! Having entered last year and not picked up any awards, this was something we really focused on this year, and it paid off.

Have you noticed a difference in patient numbers/in the practice since winning the award?

Our patients are always extremely proud of the practice. They support us in everything that we do. They have been so kind in congratulating us on our awards success.

Many of our patients have expressed pride in attending the Practice of the Year 2020! This success has spread by word of mouth and pre-COVID we had a great deal of interest from new patients.

This continued throughout lockdown, but we really can’t wait to promote our success even more once we get back to normal dentistry again!

Will you be entering the awards again this year?

Absolutely! I had such a great time at The Dentistry Awards and our practice had a ball at the Irish Dentistry Awards that we will definitely enter again!

I am even considering entering the Private Dentistry Awards and the Aesthetic Dentistry Awards.

Anything else you’d like to add?

If anyone is considering entering any of the awards, I would just say go for it! There shouldn’t be anything holding you back from entering.

The most important bit of advice I could give is to thoroughly read the entry guide and work hard to produce entries that are interesting and would catch the eye of any judge.

I would also recommend taking the time to photograph cases. Gather patient feedback and collate anything and everything you can to showcase your skills.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to shout about all the things you and your team are great at.
