The BSDHT is delighted to host this year’s oral health conference on the 26-27 November at the SEC in Glasgow.

The COVID pandemic put a stop to numerous events. Although several conferences took place virtually, many people missed out on social interaction and the chance to make friends and contacts with other fellow professionals.
So you’ll be pleased to hear that this year, the BSDHT will welcome back dental hygienists, dental therapists, students, dental nurses and dentists to enjoy its flagship member conference in Glasgow.
Held between 26-27 November in Glasgow, this event promises to be full of exciting opportunities and informative lectures. And it doesn’t matter if you aren’t a BSDHT member, you can still attend.
Healthcare professionals have been through some extremely testing times during the last 18 months. The BSDHT is working tirelessly to support its members during these difficult times. It would now love for the profession to come together, support the conference and your educational needs.
This is the first OHC since 2019. It will provide the perfect opportunity to hear from leading speakers, visit the exhibition, gain CPD, mingle with members and listen to all the latest news and views from the oral health profession.
Put yourselves in the spotlight
The theme of this year’s conferences is ‘See and Be Seen – putting the spotlight on dental hygienists and dental therapists’.
This was chosen to highlight the vast range of skills and responsibilities that fall under the profession’s scope of practice. And additionally to encourage individuals to think of ways to make the profession more visible in the industry and beyond.
It aims to inspire delegates to think outside the box. To embrace given opportunities and expand skillset and careers.
Diane Rochford, president of the BSDHT will open the conference on Friday. After which, Claire Stevens CBE from the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry will give the keynote address focusing on ‘Paediatric dentistry in a brave new world’.
The excellent conference programme also includes a presentation by Dr Jimmy Makdissi. He will present on the myths and facts of prescribing and interpreting radiographs for the dental hygienist and dental therapist.
Saturday sees another enlightening and relevant lecture by Professor Iain Chapple. He will deliver a talk titled: ‘The truth about the S3-treatment guidelines going into and coming out of COVID. Understanding this evolution and what that means in day to day practice’.
Across the two days there are lectures on early intervention, sustainability, periodontics, preserving pulp vitality and much more.
In addition to the incredible line-up of speakers, there are also award presentations. This will include poster competition winners and a Student of the Year award.
There’s also the added bonus of hands-on workshops. They give delegates the chance to acquire new practical skills and witness new products and pioneering technologies in real life. Rather than on a screen!
Visiting Glasgow
So many of us have missed out on travelling recently. What better opportunity to combine some education with a weekend away?
Attending the OHC means you will have the chance to visit Glasgow, Scotland’s second biggest city. Glasgow has some stunning architecture, a vibrant music scene and a great choice of restaurants.
You can also combine your stay with a visit to Celtic Park, the Glengoyne Distillery or the Kelvingrove Art Gallery Museum.
Wondering where to stay? There are numerous hotels around the SEC. But if you want to try something a bit different, why not opt for an Airbnb? Apartments are available for less than £100 a night, based on four people sharing. That works out only £25 a night!
Glasgow is also very easy to get to; you can travel by plane from London for as little as £50 return or £89 from London Heathrow. Or if you don’t mind the longer, more scenic route, train journeys from London start from approximately £97 return.
On Friday night, the BSDHT will host a sumptuous dinner and dance (by purchased ticket only) at the Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow. The hotel is located at the very heart of the city, directly adjoining Glasgow Central station and occupies one of the city’s most historic and impressive buildings.
With an abundance of historical grandeur, it has been visited by Winston Churchill and Hollywood stars such as Frank Sinatra. A perfect chance to glam up, let your hair down, and dance the night away!
