DLN Success Story – Mississippi DDS Volunteer Helps Woman Receive Needed Dental Care

by adminjay

Joyce, 72, is a widow who lives in Washington County with her grandson. She recently fell and injured her hip and now uses a cane to get around. In addition she suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and other health challenges and has unaddressed dental problems. She was missing all but two teeth and although she had borrowed money for an upper denture, she was unable to afford a lower denture.

Formerly a hairdresser, Joyce is unable to stand for long periods and can no longer work. Surviving on food stamps and a small Social Security benefit, she struggles to make ends meet. The much-needed dental treatment seemed far beyond her reach.

How DDS Helped

Thankfully, Joyce applied to the Donated Dental Services (DDS) program and she was linked with two generous volunteers.

  • Dr. Trey Donahoe extracted two teeth, smoothed her jaw bone, and donated a full upper and lower denture at no cost.
  • Blue Box Dental Lab fabricated a full upper and lower denture at no cost.

“Dr. Donahoe was the most kind and patient dentist I’ve known. He always had a smile and explained everything so well. He did a wonderful job. My teeth are just beautiful. I thank them so much from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, thank you, thank you and God bless!”
— Joyce, DDS Patient

“Joyce was a pleasure to work with, and she was truly grateful for the care that she received. She was very kind and took interest in getting to know myself and my staff. I think this is a great program, and I am glad to be a part of it.”
— Dr. Trey Donahoe, DDS Volunteer
