bump on the roof of [her] mouth” that prevented her from wearing her maxillary removable
partial denture. The denture was relined, but the lesion persisted and increased in
size, causing significant pain. The patient was then referred to an oral and maxillofacial
surgeon for evaluation. The patient’s medical history was significant for a heart
murmur and multiple basal cell carcinomas of the skin. The review of systems was otherwise
noncontributory, and results of the extraoral examination were within normal limits.
Intraoral examination revealed a 1.5-cm swelling at the junction of the right hard
and soft palate with a central ulceration (Figure 1). The area was tender and firm to palpation. The remaining oral soft tissues were
unremarkable.
